Film Hype #146.
The bitter fight for supremacy between the three most popular girls at North Gateway High takes an unexpected turn when their classmate, Tanner, is outed and becomes the school’s first openly gay student. The trio races to bag the big trend in fashion accessories, the Gay Best Friend, while Tanner must decide whether his skyrocketing popularity is more important than the friendships he is leaving behind.
The film inverts the high school angst of John Hughes, Mean Girls and Easy A, placing a man at the heart of a storyline that ably mixes the tongue-in-cheek with the tenderhearted. Along the way, G.B.F. offers a salient commentary on popularity, on what is and is not revealed on the rise to the top, on the value placed on those who help you get there and what happens when that value is far less than people are worth.
GBF Plays The Toronto Inside Out Film Festival May 26, Film Out San Diego May 29, Connecticut Gay and Lesbian Film Festival May 31 (Paul Iacono in attendance), Seattle International Film Festival June 5 & 6 and Closing Night of Frameline in San Francisco June 30. I will be attending all of the above with the exception of Connecticut.
PLEASE tell me someone else noticed that Rebecca GAYheart is a part of the move G.B.F.(Gay Best Friend)
G.B.F. - New film from director Darren Stein premiering today at the TriBeCa Film Festival
From the film’s Indiegogo campaign page:
Social warfare breaks out in a suburban high school when the three clique queens who rule the school compete for this year’s must-have teen girl accessory - the G.B.F. (or Gay Best Friend).
GBF tells the story of two closeted best friends, Tanner (Michael J. Willett, United States of Tara) and Brent (Paul Iacono, The Hard Times of R.J. Berger). Brent longs for the spotlight and has a plan that will make him the most popular kid in school. He believes that coming out will make him instantly popular, as the newest must-have teen girl “accessory”: The G.B.F. Tanner on the other hand, would rather fly under the radar and graduate from high school without ever being noticed.
When things don’t go according to plan and Tanner is outed instead of Brent, the two boys go from B.F.F.s to instant frenemies and the three most popular girls in school — queen-of-mean bombshell Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse, Pretty Little Liars), drama club diva Caprice (Xosha Roquemore, Precious) and sweet, Mormon good-girl ‘Shley (Andrea Bowen, Desperate Housewives) launch an all-out social war to win Tanner’s status-enhancing friendship.
Meanwhile, Tanner must choose between skyrocketing popularity and the friends he is leaving behind.
Note: This film seems very interesting to me. I love the casting choices that they’ve made, having seen and loved Paul Iacono in R.J. Berger and Megan Mullally in Will & Grace. Also the trailer does show that the film has some solid jokes.
But what I like the most is how the whole subject of the film is acceptance and breaking stereotypes. While that message is not very apparent in the trailer - they seemed to have highlighted the film’s humor rather than the message - they movie’s creators and cast have spoken to it in detail here:
I will be waiting for the film’s wide-release to check the film out in full.
